Clonmacnorse in County Offaly with its long and bloody history is today a beautiful and peaceful ecclesiastical town where the last High King of Ireland, Rory O'Connor, is buried.
The town was founded by St Kieran in 545 AD and through the centuries was invaded by Vikings, by Irish chieftains, the Anglo-Normans and by Oliver Cromwell.
Visitors can today view a host of ecclesiastical sites and buildings including a ruined monastery, towers, crosses and holy wells as well as ancient cemeteries.
