County Mayo is situated in the west of Ireland with its shorelines, mountains, cliffs and beaches formed through the ages by the mighty Atlantic Ocean.
A very special part of Ireland, pilgrims flock to Mayo to pay homage at the shrine of the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph and Saint John in Knock. It was here that here that they are said to have appeared before 15 witnesses, that miracles do happen, and the shrine has been visited by Pope John Paul II and Mother Theresa.
The shrine is recognized as a place of holiness such those at Lourdes and Fatima in Portugal. It offers those of the Catholic faith peace to pray and attend mass and meet fellow pilgrims and church dignitaries.
While in Knock it is worthwhile to visit the Knock Folk Museum which gives in insight into rural Mayo life during the 19th Century. Guided tours are available |
