Oyster Festival

The ultimate feast of fantastic Irish seafood eaten to the lilt of live music and accompanied by glasses of Guinness will once again take place in Galway in September 2010. The extravaganza begins on Thursday, September 23rd and will end on Sunday September 26th 2010. Crowds from all corners of the globe are expected to descend on Galway to enjoy its hospitality and its oysters, the world's most famous aphrodisiac.

History about the Festival

In 1954 the Great Southern Hotel was owned by Brian Collins. Business was not good. The lack of guests made him wonder how he could attract more tourists to the area and later on that day he came up with a wonderful idea. His chef suggested that they put oysters on the menu; they were in season at that time, so Brian had the idea of starting an annual celebration of the oyster. Hence the first Oyster Festival was held the next year. Brian was helped by local business people and the Guinness Company and in 1955 the very first Oyster Festival Banquet was held. 34 guests attended. Today the Festival is one of the most popular festivals in the world. It has been staged for so long and goes from strength to strength.

Oyster Pearl Competition

Every year before the Festival begins a young lady who has a special talent and a good personality is picked to be the "Oyster Pearl". The lucky girl represents the Festival itself, Galway and Ireland. This competition for the "Oyster Pearl" dates back to 1954 and the winner becomes a symbol of the Festival, is present at events and functions and keeps her post for a year.

The "Oyster Pearl" is honored with cultured pearls, money, a trophy made of beautiful crystal and a Presentation Coffret. She is also treated to a weekend in the Rochestown Park Hotel, an expensive Raymond Weil watch and vouchers for Aer Arann.

Ladies for the competition are nominated by local businesses who pride themselves in knowing that by sponsoring the ladies they are part of this old Festival which is organized and professionally and attracts tourists by its wonderful style. Should any local business people be interested in sponsoring the "Oyster Pearl" - perhaps you know of a deserving young woman thanks will be extended to you. You will be given a table which seats ten people at the Selection Banquet for the new "Oyster Pearl" and your business will be included in the many opportunities for publicity which arise every year.
