Irish Breaks
Maam Valley

The ancient woods of the valley give the area a distinct aura of a sense of magic. The Maamturk Mountains dominate the area and many historic and pre-historic sites are in evidence on them. Visitors can enjoy the long walking trail, named the Western Way, which begins at the south of the valley and walk to a very ancient site.

The rivers of Failmorem Bealanabrack and Joyce's River merge as they flow to Lough Corrib. Here, in the valley, is heaven for keen anglers at the angling centre.

For those interested in religion and architecture a visit to the Kilmeelickin Church at Maam (or Maum) is a must. Here one can view the beautiful stained glass windows of St Brendan which were created by Evie Hone from Dublin in 1950. Evie died in 1955. Onto Leenane you can look at Patrick's Bed and Patrick's Well which has been a haunt of pilgrims. In the past they congregated there on a Sunday in July but the tradition seems to be dying out. Patrick's Well is reputed to have cured illnesses in cattle and people.

The Quiet Man

This film was shot in Maam but the cottage used for filming has not been looked after. Many film fans have visited the cottage and taken away stones as souvenirs. The bridge for foot goers nearby however is still in good condition and is the location where Sean was on the first night that he went into the cottage.
