The Maamturk Mountains are not as famous as their brothers known as The Twelve Bens but are a magnificent part of the landscape of Connemara. The highest peak is 667m and, if the weather is good, the views from the mountains are spectacular. Some devoted runners can run from Maumeen to Leenane in one day.
Walking the Maamturks
Walking in the direction of Leenane the initial climbing would be more than 500 meters. The way to Mullach Glas and the first lake can be hindered by mist. When reaching the peak of Binn Chaonaigh you will see the end of the walk which is Binn Idir. When you walk past this you will walk down to Maumahoge and the second loch. An uneven way - a ridge - will be your way from Knocknahillion to Letterbreckaun. Here there are ponds and the views are beautiful. Keep descending to the Maam Turk pass but please note that the route is steep at times. After leaving the pass you walk down to the coast but again please beware as the slopes are very steep. You will arrive near Leenane.
Mweelrea Mountains
One of the best mountain groups in all of Ireland are the Mwellrea Mountains. They tower over the shores at the north of the harbour of Killary. Climbing is possible from Delphi. The route is to follow the ridges which are past the fjord. |
